image backup for physical disk volume

One of big TSM customers is requesting to support image backup of raw in physical disk volume. The physical disk volume is pointed to /dev/hdisk in case of AIX and no drive letter/mount point in case of Windows.
Today we only support image backup of logical partition (ie. /dev/lvxx in case of AIX).
Also we require drive letter or mount point name in case of Windows.

The customer wants to back up raw image for Oracle database on physical disk volume that is flash-copied.
Oracle now announces they do not support to use logical partition from Oracle 11.2 or later and strongly recommend to use disk partition.

We are proposing to use TSM for Database or FCM to protect the Oracle but it is complicated to implement it.
Additionally Symantec NetBackup claims to support AIX physical disk image backup so that the customer is planning to switch backup software.
We need to claim best backup software on AIX at least.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for submitting this enhancement request, we do understand the requirement and the rationale behind it but unfortunately we currently do not plan to implement this function in the backup archive client, as you mention, those databases should be protected by Flashcopy Manager or TSM for Database, this will provide a better experience to the user both from a backup perspective, and even more important - from a restore perspective.
