HOST Free SAN based data transfer

At present, TSM for SAN allows for a TSM Server free data transfer by mapping Tape drives to the client server. The data is then read in from the Disk subsystem via the host HBAs, and then read out to the Tape drives via the host HBAs dedicated to tape.

This can create issues as the host requires additional adapters for tape connectivity, in addition the host I/O capability becomes the bottleneck even if the underlying disk and tape subsystems are capable of far greater throughput.

The solution to this is to provide the capability to transfer the data within the SAN fabric bypassing the host, and only send the metadata from the host which is typically not the bottleneck.

The most likely integration candidate to do this workload would be the SVC.

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
    Brand - Tivoli
    Product family - Storage
Product - Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Family

Thank you for this suggestion. We understand the request and why this support would be desireable. However, we will not be implementing a solution in the next year or two as other requirements have been prioritized. We will continue to track this one internally for future considerations and planning discussions. If after the next release of the product, you would like us to reconsider this requirement, please submit a new enhancement request.
