IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

Speed up metadata scans by distributing scans to several scans agents

As far as we know Spectrum Discover in OpenShift currently uses one pod for the metadata scan (fetching owner, group, permissions, ...), the connmgr pod.

The connmgr pod seems to communicate with Spectrum Discover via the Kafka protocol and with the DB2WH via https and REST APIs. My idea is:

  • to have several connmgr pods in the OpenShift cluster so we can distribute the metadata scans

  • ... and additionally ...

  • Running a connmgr application outside of the OpenShift cluster on an external RHEL systems:

    • For example, we have four RHEL7 systems that are located close to the storage with a high bandwidth hence are more suitable to perform the scans than the connmgr pod in the OpenShift cluster

    • Spectrum Discover knows about these external scan agents and also knows which scan agent is:

      • allowed to mount a share (for example for shares that can not be mounted inside the OpenShift cluster)

      • is located close to the storage system for the share to be scanned

      • External RHEL system that runs the scan is joined to Active Directory via SSSD so Spectrum Discover automatcially receives the correct ownership of files and directories on NFS4 shares

    • In case we need to speed up our scans we want to be able to quickly add more external scan agents on RHEL systems and remove them if they are not needed anymore
