Spectrum Archive Function Enhancement - MD Anderson

MD Anderson Cancer Center has requested that IBM provide integration between Spectrum Protect backup (GPFS) and Spectrum Protect archive (LTFS) to integrate a “BACKUP REQUIRED BEFORE MIGRATION” functionality in order to eliminate the possibility of removing a file into archive before it's backed up which has in the past caused "recall" storms of thousands of files that were migrated and removed before they were backed up.

In detail the thought is that Spectrum Scale (GPFS) would add a metadata field that would indicate when a file/object has a current backup. When a file is backed up with mmbackup, this field would be set. This field would be reset when the file is changed. This would allow Spectrum Archive (or any other archive) to verify that a file/object has a current backup before migrating the file to an external pool.

Spectrum Archive EE 1.3 now has the function to skip the file migration if it is not yet backed up by Spectrum Protect backup, by using "eeadm migrate" command (previously "ltfsee migrate") with --mmbackup option.
