IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

DMAPI call dm_fd_to_handle can cause kernel crash

Our concerns centre around the behaviour of dm_fd_to_handle and dm_path_to_handle. According to the Data Storage Management (XDSM) API specification, these functions should fail with ENXIO when “The file system containing the file opened on fd or the final component of path does not support the DMAPI”.

However our testing has shown the following on Spectrum Scale 5.1.0 and 5.1.5:

5.1.0

5.1.5

The results highlighted in red are inconsistent with the Data Storage Management (XDSM) API specification, and are not flagged anywhere we can see in the Spectrum Scale documentation (e.g. https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/spectrum-scale/5.1.5?topic=functions-mandatory-implemented-in-dmapi-gpfs). Note also that the ‘Incorrect Success‘ results return a handle that may not actually be used to e.g. obtain rights with dm_request_right.
