IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Data inegrity checksum on stored data

In the time of Big Data the storage solutions are increasing in magnitude. With the growth of the data the risk of being hit by a silent data corruption also increases. Spectrum Scale itself does not check the data integrity stored on the NSD. It trusts the underlying storage hardware and it's reliability. But there is always a residual probability that the data got corrupted silently and Spectrum Scale will not be able to verify. Even if data are replicated, Spectrum Scale only can detect that there is a difference, but it can't decide which block is the correct one. The solution is to have a checksum in parallel to the data. If activated, every request (client and/or server) will validate the integrity. This could be on file base, storage pool base or file system parameter. But to have this option - even if it will cost performance - would be very valuable for specific storage repositories.

Thank you for submitting this Spectrum Scale enhancement request. We've reviewed this request, it is not on the roadmap for the foreseeable future. Our solution for end to end data checksum is based on GNR as our strategic direction
    Sincerely,
    Spectrum Scale team
