more control over hiding snapshot dirs / extend mmsnapdir

There seems to be no way to get rid of the .snapshots subdir in the root of indendepent snapshots. This is a problem when mirroring data using rsync. Because we do not want to rsync snapshots we need to exclude them. But for correct mirroring we also need to specify --delete and --delete-excluded. This results in rsync wanting to delete the .snapshots dir in the destination (we cannot leave out --delete-excluded because there are some more dirs we do not want to mirror).

So we would like to disable or hide those .snapshots dirs altogether. As we are not using fileset snapshots these directories are not of use to us, so disabling or hiding them will not make us lose any feature. mmsnapdir is already partly offering something similar with -a but this is not feasible here. We want to hide or disable all .snapshot dirs for filesets.

We have found another reason why this feature could be handy: We have created independet filesets to use as targets for IBM Storage Protect installations (actlog, actlog mirror, archive log a.s.o). The installation of Storage Protect fails when these dirs are used because they are not considered empty when the .snapshots dir is found.

So we have to create and use a subdir just to get rid of the .snapshots directory.

Having the option to hide them would help here. Alernatively it could help in this case to just have an invisible dir like man mmsnapdir mentions.

Regarding the rsync problem that initially lead to this RFE: you can instruct rsync to ignore those dirs altogether using --filter with a file containing this:
    # Hide these patterns on the source side
    H /.snapshots
    # never delete these patterns on the dest side
    P /.snapshots
