CTDB Enhancement 50/5000 to ensure an uninterrupted upgrade to new Release levels

The problem with the SMB upgrade is with the data shared between the protocol nodes. It is not tied to the protocol version used between SMB clients and the protocol nodes. Samba stores internal data (e.g. for the SMB state of open files) in tdb database files. ctdb then makes these tdb databases available across all protocol nodes. A concurrent upgrade for SMB would require correct handling of ctdb communications and the tdb records across multiple versions; that is not available today.
This affects not only ALL SMB - but also NFS Clients of the Cluster

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - IBM Spectrum Scale
Product - Spectrum Scale (formerly known as GPFS) - Public RFEs
    Component - Product functionality

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - IBM Spectrum Scale
Product - Spectrum Scale (formerly known as GPFS) - Public RFEs
    Component - Technical Foundation

Unfortunately this would require significant re-architecting of Samba/ctdb, which we cannot support at this time

I have a customer(top insurance company in China) who has the similar request. They can't stop NFS service. Because AD is used, so they can't upgrade Samba because it requires a full stop of both Samba and NFS.

This topic has been discussed as well in the GPFS usersgroup and was declined for reason that CTDB is a open source project. My personal feeling is, that exactly this is the reason why CTDB needs to be enhanced to enable opensource products fo HA.
