IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

Report fragmentation of an specific file in a Scale filesystem

We would like to report the fragmentation of a single (of course large) file in the Spectrum Scale filesystem.
Not mmdefragfs (This command only reports the fragmentation of the complete filesystem.) .
You can compare it to the Linux command "filefrag".

Due to processing by IBM, this request was reassigned to have the following updated attributes:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - IBM Spectrum Scale
Product - Spectrum Scale (formerly known as GPFS) - Public RFEs
    Component - Product functionality

For recording keeping, the previous attributes were:
Brand - Servers and Systems Software
Product family - IBM Spectrum Scale
Product - Spectrum Scale (formerly known as GPFS) - Public RFEs
    Component - V4 Product functionality

    You asked:
Is the RFE related to sparse files at all?
    Also.

Is the request to understand how the data blocks are spread across the disks?
Yes, we would like to display about which disks a file is spread. E. g. file one is spread about disk1, disk2 and disk3 and file two is spread about disk3, disk4 and disk5.

It's not clear what preciselt this RFE is requesting, since "fragmentation" is term that may be interpreted in different ways. Say, mmdefragfs reduces fragments by moving around the fragments of files. But note that only the last block in a file may be fragmented. Large files, then, are not very impacted by fragmentation of that kind.

Is the RFE related to sparse files at all? Say, is there a request to determine whether a file is sparse? (that is, whether a file does not have real disk blocks across a range of file offsets)

Is the request to understand how the data blocks are spread across the disks? Files are normally spread across multiple disks and across multiple different locations in the disks.
