storage scale ECE -Increase vdisk number limitation per recovery group

The core bottleneck comes from the ECE vdisk allocation model: every ECE filesystem consumes 2 vdisks per node. For our 12-node ECE cluster, creating one filesystem generates 24 vdisks. With the hard limit of 512 vdisks per recovery group, the maximum number of filesystems is capped. If the ECE cluster has more nodes, the available filesystem count will drop even further.

Large-scale clusters adopt a multi-tenant design. Tenants need isolated mount points and cannot access each other’s filesystems, which requires provisioning a large quantity of independent filesystems.

Our current customer is hitting this exact limitation. On their 12-node ECE, they can only create roughly 20 filesystems before hitting the 512 vdisk ceiling. This cluster spans over 500 nodes and serves multiple tenants. The customer perceives this vdisk restriction as an artificial limit on GPFS filesystem count. This limitation is blocking their multi-tenant deployment, and it may cause them to rule out GPFS in future procurement and solution selection.
