Expediting file system recovery for very large environments

Enterprise Scale environments are typically comprised of a large quantity of i-nodes and/or file counts for footprints of a few hundred PB in a single filesystem.  When an unexpected event occurs, such as fs log corruption, running mmfsck to recover the file system is a very time consuming where it can be in offline status for several hours. Since a several hour outage is unacceptable for mission critical business applications, it would be recommended to contain the recovery operation to formatting just the fs log.  A safe way to format just the fs log / journal of the filesystem and guarantee the integrity of the file system while reducing the multiple hour outage/recovery is required.
