Support NFSv4.2 server-side COPY offload in IBM Storage Scale CES NFS

IBM Storage Scale CES NFS currently returns NFS4ERR_NOTSUPP when an NFSv4.2 client issues the COPY operation. IBM support has confirmed that this operation is not currently supported.

We request support for the NFSv4.2 server-side COPY operation between files on the same IBM Storage Scale filesystem, served through CES NFS/Ganesha.

Our DataOps workflows copy large weather-data files between directories such as datalake-raw, datalake-prod, and datalake-test. With a normal client-mediated copy, the file data passes from the NFS server to the client and back to the server. This adds avoidable load to the client-facing network and can contribute to capacity constraints in our Media City Bergen datacenter.

Server-side COPY would let a supported NFS client request the copy from the server, avoiding transfer of the file contents through the client. Please document the supported client requirements, source and destination limitations, metadata and permission behavior, and the network paths used by the operation.
