Support for concurrent uCode update on DS8000 ECKD for 21CS VSEn customers

Currently, based on very old experiences with IBM z/VSE and DS8000 uCode upgrades, on the Customer "Must-Read" Information for DS8000 Code Updates Customer "Must-Read" Information for DS8000 Code Updates for example IBM DS8900F Microcode Customer Information v1.17 z/VSE (and VSEn) customers are strongly recommended that all z/VSE (and VSEn) systems be shut down for local disks and if remote disks are coupled via PPRC, prior to a DS8900F microcode upgrade.

This is an issue in term of business continuity and availability for VSEn customers, since it forces VSEn customers every time that they need to upgrade their DS8000 uCode to have a downtime in their VSEn environment. We have an existing DS8000 VSEn customer requirement for this (IBM Storage team is also aware).

Given that there have been improvements in VSEn storage handling and path recovery, we, 21CS VSEn, would like to jointly with the IBM DS8000 Storage team, evaluate if VSEn can support DS8000 concurrent uCode upgrade, by having VSEn in the same environment where DS8000 does their tests for concurrent uCode upgrade for z/OS, so that we can jointly decide to support it, if the equivalent tests passed by z/OS are passed by VSEn, or to improve VSEn if any of those test that are passed by z/OS are not passed by VSEn.

    I support the idea. 

    It would be a huge relief if this were also possible with VSE in the future. 

    Currently, I always shut down all systems as a precaution and have to do it on the weekend.

    Our corporation consist of 6 manufacturing plants of distribution transformers, and soon to be a 7th,

    located in a foreign country. We also have a technology solutions plant with 100s of support employees

    all thru out the United States. This environment makes it extremely difficult to coordinate a shutdown

    window of our Z/VSEn Production Lpar. Without concurrent upgrades, we will resist doing any upgrades,

    which is unhealthy for our DS8000 and also undesirable for IBM support.
