DS8000 "Service Required" with Yellow components / orange triangle with an exclamation mark should occur ONLY IF IBM support is needed.

Customer First-Level-Operations has to manage multiple Systemes (including DS8000 with SIMs, SNMP-Traps and more). In case of any alert First-Level-Operations checks the situation by Messages and is using the GUI https://ip-addr/DS8000/gui#dashboard

In case DS8000 "Service Required" with Yellow components it is standard action to look for open cases or open a new case.

Type: System service required

Description: The state of the storage system changed to service required.

Fix Procedure: Verify the state of the storage system. State changes for the storage system are usually reported to IBM Hardware Support through a call home notification. After the issue is resolved, this event will be marked inactive automatically.


Within the past decades, "System service required" was/is a clear statement for "IBM support needed".

Between Micrcode available/downloaded and Microcode activation time (booking tool with available time schedules) we need “some” weeks. In case of more than 4 weeks DS8K Microcode produces multiples events

  • BE9DFFBD Code activation will fail on 2107-996*75serno due to serviceable events

  • BE9C3AC1 The bundle is about to expire, please perform a code activate soon.

This produces multiple tickets within our internal ticket-system.

To prevent “FALSE ALERTs of System service required“ we’ll disable “Automatic code management” again an waiting for changing these “FALSE ALERTs” to “Information Messages.

    DS8K team agreed to decline this request. Nice idea but there are much more priorities working right now. If it's really important, you may submit a new RFE with a better rationale or justification.
