Implement password policy for CSM Users in the Basic User Registry

There is obviously no password policy for CSM Userids in the basic user registry, when using CSM on HMC.

This is a security breach, because the CSM users are not prompted to use a complex password.

But in most cases, they do it voluntary to ensure to have a save  password

Therefore I suggest to implement a password policy with  similar attributes as its is available for DS8000 GUI and DSCLI:

  • Password Expiration:    x  days
  • Failed Logins Allowed:  n
  • Password Age :           y days
  • Minimum Length :      L
  • Password History      h

Password format parameters are as follows:

  • Passwords must minimally contain one character from two of the three characters sets: letters, numbers, or symbols.
  • The allowed characters are: a-z A-Z, 0-9, ! @ $ # % & * ( )
  • Passwords must be a minimum of L characters in length (by default).
  • The user name cannot be part of the password.
  • An old password cannot be reused until after h iterations (by default).

Many thanks.

maybe a better / additional solution will be using MFA.

We can look at this but our statement has always been to use LDAP/AD/RACF services in order to implement a solution with "password policies" that fit the business requirements.
