IBM System Storage Ideas Portal

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM System Storage products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

DB2 | Consistent Copy | CDM | Safeguarded Copy

DB2 is an IBM database that is critical to many buisnesses - recoveryability from an immutable copy following a cyber threat is key to a business surviving. IBM currently does not support DB2 in it's own cyber vault story.

Sorry for the confusion. Definitely not saying that IBM is moving away from app consistent copies. There are definitely still use cases for app consistent backups. I'm saying that Safeguarded copy is designed to protect you from a cyber attack. Because of this a customer may want more frequent backups to ensure they are protected with a minimal loss in the event of an attack. However there's a trade because application consistent copies require the application to be quiesced or stopped. Causing frequent quiesces could be impactful to a business. So a mix of app consistent and crash consistent may be a more reasonable solution for some customers. CSM supports app consistent now as well as crash consistent. And allows you to schedule both at deferent intervals. And it supports db2 while doing this.

With that said, I don't know how to open an RFE on cdm. Contact me on slack tomorrow and I'll give you a contact in cdm. And answer any further questions you might have.

There is no "CDM" listed for an RFE or System Storage Ideas lab, hence this is listed here.

So what you're saying is IBM is moving away from offering applicaiton consistent backups....

I believe you meant to open this RFE on CDM as opposed to CSM (Copy Services Manager).

With that said...a couple things to note.

    - CSM (Copy Services Manager) DOES support the ability to create consistent Safeguarded Copies with FlashSystem. It is not as integrated as CDM, but CSM can invoke external scripts in order to create application consistent backups. This can be demo'd by lab services if you'd like to see it.

    - CSM can and is used in IBM Cyber Vault. In fact it is heavily used on the mainframe side.

What CSM isn't a part of today, is the IBM Sentinel solution which uses external software to scan backups for certain criteria that may detect certain kinds of cyber attacks. However, as stated previously, lab services can demo how this is possible with the interface CSM provides today. Though I would highly discourage frequent application consistent backups against production data as this may be too disruptive for applications. DB2, as far as I'm aware can handle crash consistent backups which would allow for greater frequency in backups.
